A Long Day

The sky burns in the early sun,
flat horizons feel pain.
There is a hot wind,
the sand blows the open wounds.
Who has been here before?
A man stands,
he feels pain no more.

His buddy sits,
a single tear falls upon his face
lonely.
Friends from home,
bonded by this sickness
"Don't go, I need you".
A man stands,
he feels pain no more

A man stands over the unmarked grave,
his dead white face stares.
He looks to his crying friend
dreams of a tombstone,
tears, umbrellas, family,
a sad mourn-filled day
not
the cold heat
one friend to share his feelings.
A man stands,
he feels pain no more.

The sky burns in the evening sun,
flat horizons feel pain.
It is black velvet,
except for
the war.
Night falls
they must go on,
no time to feel
they must continue

A friend vows as he writes the letter.
He writes
"Your son is . . ."
A cold shudder causes him to turn
he sees
his friend standing
"It is all right,
I feel pain no more."
